WI: No Federation?
-------------------
The Constitutional Convention has been unable to agree on the
Federation proposal, so the Commonwealth of Australia does not
exist.
Instead, Britain grants independence to the seven colonies
seperately. But without any agreement on borders, and with
some colonies quite cramped and others with land to spare,
conflict is a certainty.
The map is Mikko Jokinen's map of Australia and New Zealand.
The seven nations are: New Zealand, New South Wales,
Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and
Western Australia.
The main change in the rules is that Railroad has been
removed from the tech tree. Moving troops right across
the continent from Sydney to Perth is possible with the
Railroad advance, but totally unrealistic. Industrialization
now requires the Steam Engine rather than Railroad.
Nobody expected the Convention to fail, so nobody was prepared
for war. So each nation has a single Rifleman guarding it's capital, and
nothing more - you'll have to build your defenses to suit your tastes.
Gameplay Notes
I've only done a little testing so far. It looks like Queensland
may be a bit too powerful if all it's neighbours are CPs. In
my first game, war didn't take long to break out - by April 1901
South Australia had switched to Fundamentalism (there is a reason
why Adelaide is the City of Churches... :-)) and declared war on
Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales. WA smashed
SA quite quickly, while Queensland stomped all over NSW and
the remains of SA, leaving Victoria and Tasmania to hold out - which
they did, with Victorian troops taking Albury and Port Kembla
from the Queenslanders quite quickly, and Tasmanian marauders
causing havoc in Central Australia.
New Zealand doesn't have much scope for expansion, but is far
enough away that it can keep out of the wars which will
cripple the mainland. It seems to develop tech much faster than
the others, and can be a useful ally for a mainland player,
bringing in naval support and superior technology.
Improvements
This is only the first release, so it can certainly bear
improvement. Many of the cities aren't placed quite right
(Bathurst, for example, seems too far west, but there isn't
room to the east). My atlas is rather old, and lacks
detailed maps of the States, so city placement is not
exactly precise (but at least Cooktown is north of
Brisbane...).
Comments and suggestions - and, even better, actual
contributions (some new units and city graphics would
be nice - we're using maybe half of the available units,
so there is plenty of room) - are much appreciated.
Oh, and some leader names would be good. I'd prefer
to go with Federation-era leaders rather than the
rather obvious (and boring) Jeff Kennett and Joh Bjelke-Petersen.
